A wide spectrum of organizations implementing community level HIV programmes have either halted or reduced their interventions in the face of insecurity posed by countrywide incidences of chemical gassing and the resultant instant mob justice on suspects. 

The development threatens Zambia’s goal of achieving epidemic control of HIV by the end of this year and ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Dr Connie Osborne, a seasoned Pediatrician and Public Health Specialist of over 20 years of experience in both public and private health sectors, has been appointed as National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC) Director General designate.

She took up office on January 6, 2020 after she was formally introduced to staff at the national secretariat in Lusaka by National Institute of Public Health Director Dr Victor Mukonka who until then was the interim head of NAC.

The National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC) has thrown a challenge to the media to be agents of change in eradicating barriers to HIV and other health services faced by a group of sub populations collectively known as HIV “key populations”.

NAC Director General designate Dr Connie Osborne said the media occupied a privileged position in society giving it significant influence over its audiences.

The National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC) and the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) have led the way in the Government’s decentralization process by successfully integrating District AIDS Coordination Advisors (DACAs) into local authorities on a permanent and pensionable basis, doing away with the programme mode of employment under NAC.

The LGSC assisted by NAC has recruited 116 DACAs on behalf of all the existing districts throughout the country to enable local authorities effectively deal with the epidemic as a developmental challenge.

The National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC) has received commendations from Eastern Province media personnel after a two day orientation on the subject of key populations in the HIV response.

The journalists from all the 9 old districts of Eastern Province acknowledged their limited knowledge on key populations compounded by negative societal beliefs especially around transgender, gay and other men who have sex with men.

The second in the series of the countrywide media trainings on reporting key populations was held in Livingstone yesterday the 30th of August 2018 with National AIDS Council Acting Director General Mr. Fortune Chibamba calling upon journalists to help prevent new HIV infections through accurate coverage of the epidemic.

Addressing journalists from all the districts of Southern Province at Cross Roads Lodge, Mr Chibamba said public education and awareness in the media were potential social vaccines against HIV infections.

The National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council ()NAC) has today the 23rd of August  2018 kicked off media trainings on Key Populations with Lusaka based journalists pioneering the countrywide programme.

NAC Acting Director General Mr. Fortune Chibamba who opened the two-day training urged journalists to initiate dialogue around the subject of HIV by constantly including the subject on their respective editorial agenda in order to contribute to the national and global goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Minister of Health Dr Chitalu Chilufya has announced that the National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC) will soon be streamlined at both board and technical levels for improved coordination of civil society and other players and to increase its resource mobilization capacity.

Dr Chilufya disclosed this in Lusaka on Tuesday the 14th of August 2018  during the commemoration of the second National HIV Testing, Counselling and Treatment (HTCT) Day under theme; ‘My Family, My Nation, My Responsibility.’

According to the Zambia Population Based HIV Impact Assessment (ZAMPHIA) 2015-2016 report, 11.6 Zambians aged between 15-59 years are infected with HIV with around 46, 000 people becoming infected annually.

To avert new HIV infections and to improve care for those living with the virus, the Ministry of Health has placed greater emphasis on scaling-up HIV combination prevention services that enable individuals to maintain their HIV negative status as well as improve access to quality treatment and care services particularly through HIV Testing, Counselling and Treatment (HTCT)
