Ms Racheal Kalaba Elected Chairperson of NAC Publicity and Documentation Sub Committee

The National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC)’s Sub Committee on Publicity and Documentation has unanimously elected Ms Rachael Kalaba as its Chairperson replacing Mr Kenneth Maduma who has since taken up a diplomatic posting in Egypt. The election took place on March 15, 2017.

Ms Kalaba, who represents the youth constituency on the Council, also chairs the Finance and Administration Sub Committee.

NAC DG, Dr Reuben Mbewe officially introduced to full National AIDS Council

A full team of the National AIDS Council has welcomed the appointment of Dr Reuben Kamoto Mbewe into his position as Director General with NAC Chairperson Dr George Tembo reiterating that the appointee was the best candidate given his vast experience in the health sector.

Dr Tembo informed members of the Council that the recruitment process was above board and that the composition of the interviewing panel was drawn from a wide spectrum of representation to rule out any possible bias.

The anxiety that had gripped the National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council and its partners after the abrupt departure of Dr Jabbin Mulwanda as Director General is over following the appointment of Dr Reuben Kamoto Mbewe as the new Chief Executive Officer of the national HIV response coordinating institution.

AIDS Response skewed towards Treatment in Zambia, says NAC AG. DG, John Mwale

National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council Acting Director General Mr John Mwale has expressed concern on what he has described as a bias of the national HIV response towards treatment at the expense of prevention interventions. Mr Mwale said the bulk of the external support to Zambia’s HIV and AIDS programming was   skewed towards treatment making it assume the outlook of a medicalized response.

UNFPA boosts HIV Prevention by donating 250 Condom dispensers to NAC

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) today the 27th of January 2017 donated 250 male and female condom dispensers in its continued quest to help the Zambian government to stem the tide of new HIV infections, a gesture lauded by the Ministry of Health as it will enhance community access to the sexual risk reducing commodity.

‘Diva’ Condom on Market

 

 

A latest generation female condom dubbed ‘maximum Diva Woman’s Condom’ has been launched on the market with added usage attractions of comfort.

The ‘Diva’ is made is made from non-latex, transparent polyurethane film, far much softer and thinner than other condoms before it giving it the effect of  increased sensation for both partners. The socially marketed product was officially launched by the Government of the Republic of Zambian March 19 in Lusaka through Gender Deputy Minister Dorothy Kazunga.

NAC Boss, Dr Mulwanda fears resurgence of AIDS

National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC) Director General Dr Jabbin Mulawnda has expressed fear of a resurgence of the AIDS epidemic in Zambia unless the business as usual approach to the response is discarded.

Dr Mulwanda said the end of the threat of HIV was still in the distant future as Zambia was still registering about 42,000 new HIV infections annually. He was speaking in Lusaka today when he addressed members of the Network of Media on Health and Development, an outfit of journalists formed to spearhead information dissemination on health, development and related issues.

Zambia Scoops Award in VMMC Crusade

Zambia has won a prestigious award for its outstanding performance in the Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) programme supported by the government of the United States of America’s President’s Emergence Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) inter-agency team.

VMMC is one of the high impact HIV prevention interventions adopted in Zambia in combination with other strategies such as condom programming, HIV Testing Services (HTS) and elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV, Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) among others.

Protect Children Aganist HIV & Early Marriages-Chief Kaputa

 

Senior Chief Kaputa of the Tabwa people in Luapula Province says vulnerability issues predisposing young people to risks of HIV infection and early marriages should be addressed failure to which the vices will remain unabated.

The traditional leader singled out poverty as the major vulnerability factor influencing risky social behaviours especially among the poor rural folk. He however cautioned Zambians against looking up to others to uplift them out of poverty but rather exploit their different talents to make a difference.
